Description: Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy the organized recreational activity, sport or game of their choice. These programs may be offered by local clubs devoted to a particular activity or sport; may provide individual or team coaching assistance or instruction, access to equipment and facilities, and uniforms, if necessary; and may sponsor or make arrangements for athletes to participate in amateur competitions. Eligibility: Persons age eight and older who are considered to have an intellectual disability or cognitive delay as determined by their localities or have a developmental disability resulting in a significant functional limitation. In some locations and activities, children six and older may be allowed to participate.
Services Provided: Special Olympics Montana (SOMT) is a state-wide non-profit organization that provides year-round sports training, athletic competition, and health-related programming for individuals with intellectual disabilities. SOMT changes lives through the power of sport by encouraging and empowering people with intellectual disabilities, promoting acceptance for all, and fostering communities of understanding and respect. SOMT is an athlete-centered, family-based, volunteer-driven and sponsor-supported movement with 2,000 athletes registered in 121 programs from 65 Montana communities.
