Services Provided: Angel Flight West is a nonprofit, volunteer-driven organization that arranges free, non-emergency air travel for children and adults with serious medical conditions and other compelling needs. Our network of 1,400+ pilots throughout the 13 western states donate their aircraft, piloting skills, and all flying costs to help families in need, enabling them to receive vital treatment that might otherwise be inaccessible because of financial, medical, or geographic limitations.

Services Provided: Travel assistance benefits are funds that help Medicaid members with transportation costs. These funds help members get to and from medical appointments. When the member meets certain requirements, he/she may get help with mileage, meals, and lodging. The Medicaid Transportation Center must approve all trips before travel.

Meals and lodging are covered when the member must remain overnight. Coverage of meals begins the second day the member stays. Transportation is covered to and from the member’s appointment. The transportation method is based on the member’s medical needs. The member may use the following types of transportation: personal transportation (privately owned vehicle), specialized non-emergency transportation (wheelchair or stretcher van), or commercial transportation (taxi, bus, etc.).

Eligibility: Residents of Montana; The foundation expects to identify needs and monitor progress in the following manner: An application, adequate documentation by the attending physician confirming the need for specialized attention, communication from the medical facility from which the child will be treated, receipts for expenses that meet the support requirements and the mission of the fund
Services Provided: Financial support to families in need of a higher level of medical care for their child. The funds benefits include but are not limited to the following:
- Travel expenses (motel, food, gasoline, and emergency travel (i.e. airfare)
- Approved cancer-treating prescriptions not covered by health insurance
- Reimbursement for CAT scans, ultrasounds, bone scans, or MRIs that fall outside of the definition of inpatient cancer treatment which is not covered under many health insurance policies.

The finances are awarded on a three tier system:
Tier I: financial aid to families with children currently in treatment and continuing cancer treatment
Tier II: assistance for children with major medical needs who do not have cancer
Tier III: financial support for children with special needs who are not requiring major medical care

Below are some examples of typical passenger requirements. These are not all inclusive and may vary by organization.

  • Being medically stable
  • Not requiring medical care during the flight
  • Ability to enter and exit a small aircraft with minimal assistance (in some cases this means climbing steps or onto the wing of an aircraft)
  • Ability to sit upright in a seat with seat belt fastened for the entire flight
  • A verifiable medical need or other compelling need for travel. Most VPOs will request a medical release from the patient’s physician.
  • A financial need or other compelling circumstances. This will be determined by the organization, often on a case-by-case basis.
